Uranium

A man whom I’d not spoken to for years
before the thunder clouds released the tide
in June has come with lizard skin and tears
to tell me of the fish he caught. I tried
to calm his words or silent language signed
with shaking hands while on he rattled still
of trout with tripled eyes but rainbow blind
and stripers glowing ninety pounds until,
I say, I fish these waters for myself,
I’ll not react to mutant fishing tales
or sterile life that rests beyond the shelf
of programs tested deep below the swales.
Until such time, I tell the man, I see
my dinner glow I’ll fish for me, not he.
